Vanderplancke, Gwenaelle.
The dissolved oxygen in seawater has steadily declined in many coastal marine ecosystems in the last 50 years because of global warming and increasing coastal human activities. This decrease in oxygen in seawater causes episodes of hypoxia increasingly frequent and severe in coastal and estuarine areas. Some organisms may escape these environmental constraints by migration or dispersion. Others, with limited swimming capabilities must implement physiological regulation (phenotypic plasticity) to enable them to adapt and survive. This is particularly the case of marine fish larvae that are likely to be present in coastal nursery at the end of their development. It is now well established that the regulations implemented by organisms to cope with their...

Truchot, J; Jouve, D.
Oxygen consumption of juvenile prawns, Penaeus japonicus , was measured during the day at 4 temperatures (23, 26, 30 and 33 degree C) and at various oxygenation levels. For inactive prawns burrowed into sand, respiratory metabolism was maintained almost constant in hypoxia above a critical oxygen pressure of about 30-40 Torr. Data analysis according to a hyperbolic model indicates that the capacity for metabolic regulation was optimal between 26 and 30 degree C. Prawns acclimated 1-2 weeks at 20 degree C in moderate hypoxia (P sub(O2) around 50-55 Torr) showed a reinforced regulation of oxygen consumption when compared to normoxic controls.

Couturier, Christine.
Shellfish culture can lead to an accumulation of exopolysaccharides (EPS) over the surface of intertidal mudflats. EPS are rheologically active polymers that change water viscosity and water flow over the branchial basket of the juvenile flatfish that colonise intertidal mudflats. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of water EPS content on various aspects of the physiology and behaviour of the common sole Solea solea. Field studies revealed that water total EPS can be up to 15 mg l 1 in the field. In sole juveniles (aged class 0+) ventilatory distress was observed at concentrations above 4 mg l-1, and the intensity of the constraint decreased with fish size. Nonetheless, neither standard metabolic rate nor tolerance of hypoxia were influenced...

Cadiz Barrera, Laura.
In the context of global change, decrease in oxygen availability (hypoxia) combined with rising water temperature are especially prevalent in coastal regions, towards which marine fish larvae may drift at the end of their development. It is well admitted that the physiological regulations implemented by organisms to cope with their environment during the early life stages of life can cause profound consequences in their subsequent life-history trajectory (developmental plasticity). Therefore, the main objective of this thesis was to investigate whether ecologically relevant conditions of oxygenation (40% and 100% air saturation) combined with thermic conditions (15 and 20 °C), occurring at the last stages of larval development of European sea bass...

The project “Risco”, supported by the “Pôle Mer” and funded by the Regional Council of Brittany, deals with specific risks of mortality of oysters, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated on the bottom, in a subtidal bay of South Brittany : the bay of Quiberon (56, France). Massive mortalities of oysters were reported in summer 2006 in this bay, exclusively located in the deep muddy area with a positive gradient eastward. A validated biogeochemical model was applied in order to simulate the dissolved oxygen over 2000-2006 : it revealed several episodes of hypoxia, more or less intense according to years, but with the same spatial distribution. This approach proved 2006 to be the most hypoxic year since 2000. The hypoxia was due to a rare conjunction of 3 factors :...

Chatelier, Aurelien.
Diet quality, and particularly fatty acids composition, is an environmental factor that is emerging as a significant source of physiological diversity. Indeed, numerous recent studies show that the fatty acid composition of the diet influences cardiac and metabolic performances of organisms. Because it is involved in the control and regulation of internal flow of matter and energy, the heart is believed to play a central role in environmental adaptation in fish. Within the double context of adaptation of individuals to their ecological niche and species evolution, understanding sources of interindividual variability and particularly fatty acid influences on the cardiorespiratory system is essential. The objective of the study was to investigate in the sea...
